This Privacy Policy explains how Visyntech ("the Company", "We", "Us", "Our") collects, uses, stores, and protects information when you use the Maita mobile application ("the App", "the Service"). Maita is an AI-powered e-learning platform designed for students, teachers, and educational institutions.
By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account and Profile Information
When you register, we collect:
- Full name
- Email address
- Phone number (optional, for phone-based authentication)
- Profile picture (if you choose to upload one)
- User role (student, teacher, or institution)
- School or institution name
- Grade level or subjects taught
1.2 Authentication Data
We support sign-in via Google and email/password. When you authenticate through Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile photo from your Google account. We do not receive or store your Google password.
1.3 Educational and Usage Data
To power learning features, we collect:
- Courses enrolled in, syllabi selected, and lesson progress
- Quiz and flashcard scores, streaks, and study statistics
- AI assistant chat conversations and prompts
- Teacher-generated content (lesson plans, quizzes, homework, worksheets)
- Uploaded resources (PDFs, images, documents) for the library and classrooms
- Community posts, group messages, and comments
- Content reports and feedback submitted through the in-app flag/report feature
1.4 Device and Technical Data
We automatically collect:
- Device model, operating system, and app version
- Unique device identifiers
- IP address and network information
- Crash logs and diagnostic data
- Analytics events (via Firebase Analytics) such as screen views, feature usage, and session duration
1.5 Media and Sensor Data (With Your Permission)
Certain features require on-device permissions. These are only accessed when you explicitly use the feature, and you can revoke them at any time in your device settings:

Note: Maita does not request broad access to all files, photos, or videos on your device. On Android 10 and above, we use scoped storage and the system file/photo picker, which only grants access to files you explicitly select.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Provide core learning features: Deliver courses, quizzes, flashcards, AI tutoring, syllabus navigation, and progress tracking.
- AI-powered content generation: Process your prompts and educational context through Google Vertex AI (via Firebase AI) to generate quizzes, flashcards, lesson plans, homework, worksheets, study plans, and chat responses.
- Community features: Enable group chats, direct messaging, resource sharing, and collaborative learning.
- Teacher tools: Allow teachers to create, export, print, and share AI-generated teaching resources.
- Account management: Authenticate users, manage profiles, and handle premium subscriptions.
- Safety and moderation: Process reports and flags submitted by users on AI-generated content, chat messages, and user profiles to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Analytics and improvement: Understand usage patterns to improve features, fix bugs, and enhance the learning experience.
- Notifications: Send study reminders, streak alerts, and important updates.
- Compliance: Meet legal obligations and enforce our terms of service.
3. AI-Generated Content
Maita uses Google Vertex AI (via Firebase AI) to generate educational content including quizzes, flashcards, lesson plans, homework assignments, worksheets, study plans, and conversational tutoring responses.
- Your prompts, selected topics, and educational context are sent to Google's AI servers for processing.
- AI-generated content may not always be accurate. Users can report inaccurate, inappropriate, or harmful AI-generated content using the in-app flag/report button.
- We do not use your personal conversations or educational data to train AI models. Google's data processing for Vertex AI is governed by Google Cloud's Data Processing terms.

5. Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored on Google Firebase servers. We implement the following safeguards:
- All data in transit is encrypted via TLS/SSL.
- Firebase Security Rules restrict database and storage access to authorized users.
- Firebase App Check protects our backend from unauthorized access.
- Passwords are managed by Firebase Authentication and are never stored in plain text.
- Some data (preferences, cached content) is stored locally on your device using encrypted local storage.
While we take commercially reasonable measures to protect your data, no system is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Data Retention
- Account data: Retained as long as your account is active. Deleted within 30 days of account deletion request.
- Educational content: Quizzes, flashcards, and teacher-generated content are retained as long as your account exists.
- Community content: Chat messages and group posts are retained as long as the relevant group or conversation exists.
- Analytics data: Aggregated analytics data is retained for up to 14 months (per Firebase Analytics defaults).
- Reports and flags: Content reports are retained for moderation purposes and may be kept after content removal for compliance.
7. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only in the following circumstances:
- With other users: Your name, profile photo, and role are visible to other users in your classrooms and community groups. Content you post in groups is visible to group members.
- With service providers: Firebase (Google) processes data on our behalf for authentication, storage, analytics, and AI features as described in Section 4.
- For legal reasons: We may disclose data if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Visyntech, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, user data may be transferred. We will notify users before their data is subject to a different privacy policy.
8. Your Rights and Choices
You have the following rights regarding your data:
- Access and correction: View and update your profile information in the app's Profile settings.
- Data deletion: Request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us at feedback@maita.africa. You can also delete your account from within the app settings.
- Permission management: Revoke camera, microphone, notification, or storage permissions at any time through your device settings.
- Opt out of notifications: Disable push notifications in the app settings or your device settings.
- Report content: Flag inappropriate, inaccurate, or harmful AI-generated content or user messages using the in-app report button.
9. Children's Privacy
Maita is designed for educational use and may be used by students of various ages, including those under 13, under the supervision of a parent, guardian, or educational institution.
- We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 without parental or institutional consent.
- If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal data without your consent, please contact us at feedback@maita.africa. We will promptly delete the data.
- Educational institutions using Maita are responsible for obtaining any necessary parental consent in accordance with applicable laws (e.g., COPPA, POPIA).
10. International Data Transfers
Visyntech is based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Your data is processed and stored on Google Firebase servers, which may be located outside of Zimbabwe. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your information to jurisdictions that may have different data protection laws. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place through Google's data processing agreements.
11. Premium Subscriptions
Maita offers premium subscription plans. Payment processing is handled by the respective app store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store). We do not collect or store your payment card details. Subscription status is synced to your account for feature access.
12. Offline Data
Maita stores some data locally on your device (such as preferences, cached lessons, and study progress) to enable offline functionality. This data remains on your device and is not transmitted unless you are connected to the internet and actively using synced features.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will:
- Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
- Notify you of significant changes through the app or via email.
We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
